Education & Honors:

Education has always been critically important to me. I knew very early in life that I wanted to be a doctor, so fulfilling that dream drove my academic career. I graduated at the top of my high school class, fourth in my collegiate graduating class, and 25th in my medical school class. Doing well in school and in my training laid the groundwork for pursuing perfection in helping my patients be as healthy and happy as they can be. Board Certified: American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology Fellow: American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Residency: Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, TX, 1984-87 Internship: University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, TX, 1983-84 MD: University of Texas Branch, Galveston, TX, 1983 BS: Chemistry, Magna Cum Laude, Southwestern University, Georgetown, TX, 1979 Advanced Coursework, Conferences, and Seminars: Medical Ethics and Professionalism, Neonatal Resuscitation, Clinical Quality Improvement, Maternal Fetal Medicine and Nursing, New Treatment for Type II Diabetes, Special Needs of Women Over 40, Conference on Women’s Health Care, Premature Labor, and Preeclampsia Management

Leisure:

In my leisure time, I enjoy reading, arts and crafts, taking care of my pets, and spending time with my son and daughter. I knew I wanted to be a doctor from the time I was 3 years old. Being an OB/GYN and providing total women’s wellness care is very rewarding. Each day, I can make a difference in a patient’s health and in turn help a young woman, a mother, or a grandmother improve the overall quality of her life. Through education, I can help you make the right decisions about your health care, and through surgery, I can solve the root of a problem. Helping you be the most informed patient means I can also help you be the most healthy.

Dedicated to Serving the Community

Through my service at area hospitals, I am also reaching the communities those hospitals serve. My daily job allows me to help the women who rely on me to be their health care partner, but by being active on hospital committees, the work I do can positively affect a larger percentage of women and children. Mat-Su Regional Medical Center: Palmer, AK, active staff since 2006; General medical staff, 2006-present; medical exec. Committee 2006-present; Credentials committee, 2006-present; Maternal Child Health, 2006-present; Surgical Tissue Committee, 2006-present; Board of Trustees, 2006-Present; Valley Hospital: Palmer, AK, active staff since 1991-2006; Credentials committee, 2001-2006; Maternal Child Health, 1991-2006; Surgical Tissue Committee, 1991-2006; Medical Staff Peer Review Committee, 2003-05; Board of Trustees, 2003-2006; Utilization Review Committee – Ethics Committee, 1997-99; Domestic Violence Task Force, 1999.

I absolutely love to deliver babies. What more joy could one ask for than to build a career on bringing miracles into the world? I also enjoy the challenges and rewards of well-women care. When I see a patient overcome a condition and progress to full health, or I am able to help a couple to conceive and guide them through prenatal care to deliver a baby—that’s as fulfilling to me as a human being as it is to me as a doctor.

Katie Van Atta, CNM, PA-C

Katie Van Atta, CNM, PA-C

Katie joins Generations with a diverse background in health care as a midwife and physician assistant. She originally planned to practice rural family medicine, but when she saw her first birth during PA school, she knew she wanted to be involved in birth as well. She completed an OBGYN PA post-graduate fellowship at a large teaching hospital in California and worked there for several years. Then she decided to pursue an adventure in rural medicine and moved to Adak Island, AK, where she worked as the only full-time licensed health care professional for the next three years. She became interested in out-of-hospital birth after several of her nieces and nephews were born at home on the farm in Iowa, and she decided to pursue additional training in midwifery. She became a Certified Nurse-Midwife in 2018 after completing her clinical training in birth center and home birth at Mat-Su Midwifery and Family Health. She enjoys primary and preventive health care, women’s health, and attending births in all environments. When she is not working as a midwife, she enjoys working as a PA in rural health clinics and participating in all the outdoor activities Alaska offers.

Ana Chartier

Ana Chartier

A lifelong Alaskan, Ana is thrilled to join Generations Medical Center, where she will serve fellow Alaskan women as an OB/GYN. Raised in a commercial fishing family, Ana is a proud alumna of the Susan B. English K-12th school in Seldovia, AK, where she played basketball and volleyball as a Seldovia Sea Otter. Ana completed her undergraduate studies at Brown University, where she graduated with honors in Community Health and International Relations. She spent several years working in restaurants, on fishing boats, and traveling internationally before dedicating herself to public health work, first for the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium and then for the Bristol Bay Area Health Corporation. Recognizing a strong desire for clinical skills and one-on-one patient interaction, she went on complete her medical studies at the University of Washington School of Medicine as an Alaska WWAMI student. In medical school, Ana sought to understand women’s health issues both around the globe and back at home by pursuing a Maternal Child Health internship at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland, and a medical rotation in Malawi, Africa. She also rotated in Bethel, Fairbanks, and Juneau, Alaska.

Ana completed her residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of California Davis Medical Center in June 2020. She is so grateful to be back in her home state, where she plans to pursue her love of all types of outdoor adventure while combining her Alaskan roots, her public and international health background, and her passion for women’s health to contribute to the health and well-being of women in the Matanuska-Susitna region. Ana is especially excited for the long-term patient partnerships she will cultivate at Generations. Being there for women from adolescence to older adult years and all the milestones and curve-balls the female body likes to challenge us with in between is why she loves to go to work every day (and often in the middle of the night!).
